Y Chromosome Test

Authorized DNA Collection Site for CIC

Confirm a shared patrilineal (paternal) line between male relatives.

Y chromosome is very useful in making links where the paper trail for surnames is limited. In other words this test can accurately determine the paternal lineage of male relatives. This test is a good alternative when paternity DNA testing is not an option.

When to use a Y chromosome DNA test?

  • If paternity DNA test is not possible then a Y chromosome DNA test is a good option. Testing the alleged father's brother/s with putative father's male child can confirm whether there is a paternal relationship.
  • Siblings (males) wishing to confirm if they share same biological father. If they have different Y chromosome profiles they do not share a common paternal line.
  • Any male relatives who wish to confirm whether they share a common paternal line, no matter how distant.
  • In immigration cases when proof of biological relationship is required.
  • Y chromosome STR test helps in adoption cases where children grow up want to find their biological or "birth" families.

Note: We can only guarantee standard result turnaround time when testing takes place solely using oral swab samples. Using a discreet sample for your test may lead to an increase in turnaround time.

Science Behind the Y chromosome DNA Test

A Y chromosome represents about 2% of the human genome and is paternally inherited with low mutation rate. The Y chromosome STR test looks at the markers on a Y chromosome and compares them with other Y chromosome markers. Using this test we can determine paternal lineage of a male individual or determine the biological relationship between other male individuals.Â
