What Is a Legal DNA Test?
A legal DNA test is a court-admissible paternity or relationship test that follows strict chain of custody protocols. Unlike at-home kits, legal DNA tests require identity verification through government-issued photo ID, witnessed sample collection by a trained professional, and tamper-evident packaging — ensuring results are accepted by courts, immigration offices, and government agencies across Canada.
A legal DNA test is a DNA analysis conducted under strict chain-of-custody procedures so the results are admissible in court.

Science Behind DNA Tests
The science behind DNA testing for paternity and other biological relationships relies on the analysis of genetic markers inherited from both parents. Every individual inherits half of their DNA from their biological mother and half from their biological father. By comparing specific regions of the DNA, known as genetic loci, laboratories can determine whether individuals share the expected pattern of inheritance. In paternity testing, for example, the child’s genetic profile is compared to that of the alleged father to confirm whether he has contributed the required half of the child’s DNA. Similar methods are used to establish maternity, sibling relationships, and other familial connections. Accredited laboratories use highly advanced techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis to ensure accurate, reliable, and legally defensible results.
