Information about alternative or discreet samples
Every cell in the human body contains the same genetic code, which means that any biological sample from a person—regardless of the source—holds identical genetic information. Our lab is equipped to analyze a variety of alternative biological samples, such as fingernails, hair with visible roots, earwax, and more.
The ability to extract a complete DNA profile from a discreet sample largely depends on the sample’s quality and how well it has been preserved. Proper preservation is essential to ensure we can retrieve enough genetic material to compare with another individual’s DNA and determine a biological relationship.
When a sample contains sufficient DNA, the results are just as accurate and reliable as those obtained from standard mouth swab or blood samples.
Important Note:
Our lab will make every effort to extract DNA from an alternative sample; however, success depends entirely on the condition and quality of the sample provided. If the sample does not yield enough DNA for analysis, a new sample will be required, and an additional fee will apply.
Why discreet samples for a DNA test?
Common reasons for using discreet or alternative samples for a DNA test:

To resolve paternity doubts privately without creating family tension.
-
When a mother has concerns about the biological father of her child.
-
To collect a DNA sample without drawing attention or raising suspicion.
-
When a father wishes to confirm paternity confidentially before taking further steps.

While it is possible to test discreet samples, legal and ethical considerations vary. In legal cases, consent is usually required, and results from unconsented samples may not be admissible in court.
Yes, the DNA results are just as accurate if enough usable DNA is successfully extracted. However, the quality and quantity of DNA in alternative samples can vary depending on the item and how it’s handled.
