Legal DNA Testing vs Private DNA Testing

When DNA test results are needed for legal purposes—such as child support, custody, inheritance, or updating a name on a birth certificate—a Legal DNA Test is required. These tests are court-admissible and follow a strict chain of custody. Samples must be collected at an approved Canadian DNA Services collection site, and all participants must provide government-issued ID along with a recent photograph. Scheduling an appointment is necessary for legal testing.

Private DNA Tests offer the same information as legal tests but are not intended for court use and are not court-admissible. They have no special collection requirements and can be conveniently performed at home using our easy-to-use DNA test kits.

Difference between a Home DNA Test and a Legal DNA Test

HOME PATERNITY TEST

A home paternity DNA test is carried out in situations where paternity DNA test results are used for peace of mind (information purposes only). The DNA samples for home paternity DNA test can be collected by the test parties themselves from the comfort of their home using our DNA collection kit. Forensics Canada Inc. can ship the collection kit to different locations discretely to all the test participants for privacy purposes. After collecting the samples, simply return them to Canadian Forensics for analysis. The laboratory procedures and the accuracy of the DNA test results are the same for legal as well as peace of mind DNA tests. Test results are emailed to all the test participants within 7-10 working days.

LEGAL PATERNITY TEST

A legal paternity DNA test is no different than a home paternity test as far as the accuracy and DNA testing procedure is concerned. The only difference lies in the sample collection and chain-of-custody procedure.  Legal DNA Paternity Tests require the participant’s samples to be collected at one of our collection facilities or through a mobile collection by one of our forensic DNA professionals. The participant’s identity must be verified with a government issued ID and a photograph is taken. A strict chain of custody for samples is maintained from sampling, packaging and sending them off to the laboratory. Results of a legal test are issued by email and also by hard copy.

The Science Behind Paternity DNA Testing

A paternity DNA test works by comparing the child’s DNA with that of the alleged father. Each child inherits half of their genetic material from their biological mother and half from their biological father.

Our lab examines 21 genetic markers to determine whether the alleged father is biologically related to the child.

  • 99.99% accuracy for inclusion (positive match)

  • 100% accuracy for exclusion (negative match)

DNA testing is the most reliable and scientifically proven method to establish biological relationships.

Frequently Asked Questions – Paternity DNA Test

A paternity DNA Test answers the most frequently asked question – who is the father? A child inherits half of his/her genetic make-up from mother and the other half from its father. By comparing the child’s DNA profile with that of the alleged father we can determine whether or not the person is the biological father of the child.

From a scientific point of view a home paternity DNA test is no different than a legal paternity DNA test. For legal paternity DNA test strict chain of custody documentation is maintained to ensure the court admissibility of the tests for paternity disputes child, custody and  child support. The tests of a home paternity test on the other hand have no legal validity are mainly used for peace of mind or just for reassurance.

A standard paternity DNA test costs $249.00 plus applicable taxes for two tested person (1 child and 1 alleged father).

Paternity DNA testing can be performed on individuals at any age. Samples from a newborn can be collected easily on the day of birth.
